Sunday was a great day flying on the campsite fells. Great experience for me to fly on SFR within ATZ. Thanks to Dave for the task. Shame there was not more wind but again very happy to have some flying in November. Lets hope theres more to come.

    Cheers.

    Ben.

I had expected more folk would come along but we were 9 for the site briefing at the Crow road car park in beautiful conditions. We walked up the shoulder to where there was a light breeze which I was sure would be easily soarable. After a quick task brief (just one turnpoint at Brown Hill at the far E end of the ridge ) I launched but within a few seconds was wishing I’d waited a bit – the valley was in shade and the wind indicated by the faint wisps of clouds just above the ridge , wasn’t there below hill top. So it was small weak thermals with big sink and very quickly it was game over. Stephen fell for it too and was down equally quickly despite a good try at following a buzzard in a weak thermal. As we slogged back up in the blazing sun it was clearly getting better – with Khaled showing how to soar it. We got back up and away for another attempt which was much more pleasant - still small broken climbs but enough to stay up and even ( No more characters left !!)

Was a beautiful day and fantastic views over Clyde valley. Was really keen to fly this site as it's just up the road from my house and never ventured near to it due to the flying restrictions. So great to get a full briefing from Dave T and Bruce (local pilot. Walk up seemed a lot easier than the day before and wasn't conscious of being daunted by the height of launch but did seem a bit nervous groundhandling. After Dave T and Stephen Pegler flew down and the cloud seemed to be coming in I decided that I would go for a very conservative flight plan - single beat along the ridge push away from the hill then aim for the landing field. Al this went to plan and really enjoyed the flight. Did walk up to the carpark again but it was after 3PM by this time and I felt I was going to be quite fatigued if I continued up the hill with the pack for a second flight so called it a day and walked up the hill to take a couple of photos - all in all great day at a new site on my doorstep.
