Club Flying Night: Wed 21 May
Wednesday 21 May
At the last committee meeting it was decided to try and run some club
flying evenings over the summer, with the aim of meeting up at a venue
and either flying if the weather was suitable, or, if not then passing
some time in the local hostelry.
Whilst the weather this week would have been perfect, it is probably
too short notice, so I am keeping my fingers crossed and going for
Wednesday 21st May.
We will decide the venue on Monday 19th May and try and keep it
relatively easy to access for as many as possible. It will be posted
here on the group.
I look forward to seeing you all in the air next week.

LLSC Round (Tinto BBQ): 20/21 Sep May
This weekend (20/21 Sep) will be the rescheduled date for the LLSC round of the
Nationals. The forecast is good for flying at Tinto both Saturday and
Sunday. This is a great opportunity for everyone who has done less
flying than they'd have liked during our unusual summer, to get some
good flying before it becomes seriously autumn. Especially our new
members who haven;t had much chance to meet up with everyone.
Meet at Wiston Village Hall at 10 on Saturday morning. BBQ on Saturday evening (bring your grub and drink - we provide the BBQ). Camping beside the hall or sleep on the floor in the Hall.
Saturday 20 September 2008
Flying Greenhill (Tinto S). Wind S strong but reasonably smooth cloud
low covering the cairn at big Tinto. Flying limited to low in front of
Greenhill.
Task 1/1: Fly over forest at front of Greenhill for 100 points then slope land at launch for a further 100 points.
Sunday 21 September 2008
Morning flying Greenhill (Tinto S). Wind SW stronger than yesterday
with sharp edged thermals. Cloud clear of cairn on big Tinto
Afternoon flying Dungavel. Wind light SW with 90% sunshine and thermic
'magic lift' everywhere.

Club Nights
During winter the club arranges a monthly meeting as a combined instruction and social evening. This is very much an open forum, so if anyone feels the urge to present a short (20min) talk on a flying-related topic you only have to get in touch. Likewise, bring your flying pics on a CD/DVD for general viewing.
The venue is upstairs at Buchanan Arms Hotel on Buchanan Street in central Glasgow, and only two minutes walk from Queen Street station. There is a bar downstairs with bottled and draught beers, wines, etc.
Club Night Topics
More variety makes it all more interesting, and some of the past talks have covered: XC Routes from Tinto, Flying Holidays in Morocco, Tow Conversions, Hangliding in Ukraine, Global Positioning Using Maps, Best Flying Shots of the Year.....and of course the X-Alps Director's Cut.
Current suggestions for discussions:
- GPS Track Visualisation - Demo of different software and maps
- Winter Flying - What are the differences when flying in winter conditions?
- Choosing Flying Location from Maps - Flyable features to look for on the map.
- Convergence - What is it? Where is it? Should I fly in it?
- Thermalling Techniques - Always useful and interesting
- In-flight Decision Making - Left or Right, Speed up/Slow down: simple answers with difficult decisions
AGM
This year's AGM is scheduled for 26th March, 2008 in the Buchanan Arms Hotel (as always) and provides your first opportunity to pay your subscription early! There is the usual AGM stuff, and election of the committee members, followed by an open photo session to talk us through a selection of your flying photos.
Tinto Clearances
See details of Tinto Clearance - Round 2.
Round 1 of the Tinto clearances took place on Sunday 23rd December and was a great success. There were about twenty volunteers who turned up for the work, and with such large numbers we made excellent progress. It was a bitterly cold day, with strong, icy SE winds blowing up the hill, but once we got the fires burning they were more than a match for the cold.
We have now cleared and burned all of the debris on the lower SW takeoff, as well as extending the hill on the east side. Further work is still required to slash and burn the newly-cut trees, cut down more trees, clear and extend the top takeoff, and open up better access to the windtalker. Dates and details will be posted when decided.
