Weather Forecasting

>> Home >> Coaching >>

Predicting the weather is a big subject on it's own! It determines whether it's flyable and where you can fly, so the more you know about the subject the better for your flying. You will find a lot of knowledge within the club on the subject, especially related to flying weather.

If you are new to the subject the Met Office has produced a small course in learning about weather as a series of factsheets. Of particular relevance to pilots trying to predict the flying weather are the following ones:-
Dave Thomson (Head Coach PG) produced a webcast on the process of predicting the conditions for a given day. Rather than looking at the weather on the morning of a good day, David starts to look at the forecast a few days in advance in order to get a bigger picture of what is happening. This allows him to predict not just the conditions on the day, but timings, etc. He used the forecast for Sunday, 11th July 2010 as an example of how he does his weather forecasting. 24 minutes.
