Site History: Howgate lies on the same ridge as Tinto but is separated by a deep gully known as Howgate Mouth. LLSC have recently purchased this hill and have thus taken one more step to securing flying in the region.
Altitiude at Launch: 1345ft/410m
Height top to bottom: 361ft/110m
Airspace: TMA CLASS 'D' above 5500ft
National Grid Reference: NS 916341
Wind Direction: South to South-East, best in South-East
Brief Site Description: Moderate tree covered hill
How to get there: From the M74 Junction 11 or 12 (Happendon Services) take the A70 heading east then first right after passing through Rigside (B7055). Follow road for approx. 5km to junction with the white house on the right and track on the left.
Restricted Areas: Lambing does not usually stop flying here, but if in doubt, see the farmers before flying.
Parking Notes: Park in the quarry at the top of the track.
Landowners: Farmers - Mr Linton, Sornfallow Farm. Launch area owned by LLSC.
RAF Ref. Freephone ref 16.001 / 16.002 quote both codes.
Launch Notes: Hang-gliders: From the bend/junction of the track immediately before the quarry, follow the path along the side of the fence, cross the fence at the stile and continue through the trees. Turn left when the trees open out and continue round the hill to a suitable launch site. There are a lot of trees at the top of the hill so it is advisable not to set up too close in stronger conditions or you could be picking your canopy out the trees. As part of the land management, the club expects to clear certain trees to improve access and improve the launch areas.
Paragliders: As per HG.
XC Tips: Can be limited by airspace to the north - TMA D 4500'+ approx 4km north of launch changing to TMA E 2500' - 6000' approx 11km north of launch. Airspace is TMA D 5500' to the south. Most common route is to fly accross Howgate Gap onto Tinto South then follow the main ridge to 'the Dimple' and on from there.
Top Landing Notes: The hill has a large area of open ground but difficulty can be experienced in stronger winds due to the steepness at take off and the trees immediately behind take off. It is a relatively small take off ridge, so look out for other pilots ready to launch.
Bottom Landing Notes: Hang-gliders: Land in the large field between Sornfallow Farm and the track. The field slopes downwards and can be tricky, but you soon get used to it. Alternatively (esp when soarable), land in the usual large field across the road.
Paragliders: can land anywhere
Hazards: Obvious hazards are the coniferous trees behind take off and further down the slope and a few fences. Paragliders: with the narrow gap, 'Howgate Mouth' between the quarry and Howgate there is the possibility of getting 'hoovered' through in stronger winds for - keep well out from the hill if this is likely.
Special Rules: Site fees of £2.00 (for non-members only) are payable when flying here. Sign the book and leave fees as you stop at the gate on the track.
